What Does a Musandam Dhow Cruise Actually Cost?

The honest headline: a half-day dhow cruise through the Musandam fjords costs about $37 per person, and that is the most-booked boat on the water, not a stripped-back one. It is rated 4.9 by 544 travellers, it collects you from your hotel in Khasab for free, and it hands you snorkelling equipment when you board.

The reason people expect a bigger number is that most of the prices they have seen were quoted from Dubai.

The four price tiers

About $37 — half-day from Khasab. Six hours or so on a shared dhow into Khor Ash Sham, a snorkelling stop, dolphin watching, refreshments and lunch on board. Free pickup within Khasab, the airport and the cruise terminal. Snorkelling equipment included.

$50–$65 — full-day from Khasab. More hours on the water rather than a different boat. At $65 one operator gives you five and a half hours at Telegraph Island, provides equipment and towels and life jackets, and includes a buffet lunch with unlimited drinks. If you want the fjords properly rather than as a morning, this is the tier that delivers it.

$133–$180 — packaged day from the UAE. Around $140 is typical for pickup anywhere in Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman or Ras Al Khaimah, the drive to Khasab, the cruise, lunch, and the drive back. Roughly $100 of the difference is transport and the border, not the boat.

$230 and up — overnight. Sleeping on the dhow with camping and a barbecue, or private charters. A genuinely different product.

Where the extra $100 goes

It is worth being precise about this, because it looks like a markup and mostly is not.

A UAE-based day trip is buying you a vehicle at your hotel before dawn, roughly two to two and a half hours of driving each way, an international border crossing with formalities on both sides, a driver who does that crossing daily, and the same six hours on the water at the end of it. That is a fourteen-hour day for the operator.

What it does not buy is your visa. Border crossing fees and visas are excluded from every package we have looked at — the tour handles the route and the queueing, not your eligibility to enter Oman.

The cheapest real option is not the cheapest ticket

If you have the time, the arithmetic changes completely: fly or take the ferry into Khasab, stay a night, and book the $37 local cruise in the morning.

Even with a modest hotel, that often lands close to the cost of the packaged day from Dubai — and instead of five hours in a minibus you get an evening in Musandam and a boat trip you are awake for. For anyone who is not tied to a Dubai hotel booking, this is the option we would take.

What price does not tell you

The single most useful thing in this guide: inclusions do not follow price here.

The $37 half-day cruise includes snorkelling equipment. A $60 cruise on the same fjord explicitly excludes it and asks you to bring your own — it puts the money into a buffet lunch and unlimited refreshments instead. A $65 day tour includes gear, towels and life jackets.

None of that is hidden; all of it is in the listings. But if you book on price alone you can pay $23 more and arrive without a mask.

Two other things that are almost always excluded, at every tier: visas and border fees, and pickup from outside Khasab, which is chargeable even on the boats that collect you free within the town.

What is genuinely worth paying more for

Hours, if you like being on water. The step from half-day to full-day is the best-value upgrade on this coast — it is $25 or so for roughly double the time in the fjords, and the extra hours are the quiet ones.

Not the boat. Dhows across this price range are much the same: wooden, carpeted, shaded, with cushions on deck. Paying more does not get you a better vessel, and any listing implying otherwise is selling you the itinerary, not the hull.
